Passengers now have the option to book trips with a local operator via the Uber app
Uber has today announced that it is launching Local Cab in nine new locations across the UK, enabling passengers in these areas to book a trip with a local taxi operator via the Uber app.
In Southampton, Pontefract, Weston-super-Mare, Newport and Bristol, Local Cab will run alongside regular Uber-operated services, including UberX, UberXL and Comfort.
Meanwhile in West Dunbartonshire and Helensburgh, Banbury, Canterbury and Essex (Benfleet and Canvey Island), passengers will be able to use the Uber app to book a ride for the first time, fulfilled by a local operator.
Since the company’s successful pilot of Local Cab last year, the product has launched in over 40 locations across the UK.
Sajid Majid, Director at Data Yorkshire:
“We’re excited to be among the first operators in West Yorkshire to launch with Local Cab. Demand for taxis in Pontefract is high and we know there’s a real appetite among passengers for more transport options, so Local Cab has arrived at just the right time.”
Simon May, Director at Radio Taxis Southampton:
“Partnering with Uber will provide more transport options to the people of Southampton, allowing them to book a taxi ride at the touch of a button. We're hoping that the extra trips Local Cab generates will also encourage more new drivers to join our fleet.”
Jamie Heywood, Uber’s Regional General Manager for Northern and Eastern Europe:
“We’re excited to add nine new areas to our growing list of locations across the UK where riders can access Local Cab. This will help maximise earnings opportunities for drivers while giving passengers more choice, meaning that everyone will benefit. We’re looking forward to launching Local Cab in more UK towns and cities soon."
